Exploring Fashion and Sustainability : A round up of The Green Room
Last Sunday, the 29th of July, was a very special one.
A few months ago, purely by the power of Instagram socialising, I happened to meet Honey Islam, one of the lovely ladies behind Muraad
- a sustainable jewellery brand. It so happened that the same day, I had a call scheduled with Varsha Mohan, the Chennai-based sustainable fashion blogger behind Moderas.in
Noticing the similarities in the conversations I had with each of them led me to plan a meeting with both of them together. As the 3 of us sat together talking about all things Chennai, eco and fashion, we realised that there was a lack of a space where like-minded folks (like ourselves) could meet, network and discuss about sustainable fashion and living.
The next thing we knew, The Green Room was born. And 29th July was the first edition. Our topic for this session was “Conscious Shopping : The Hows and Whys”.
We had two talks : One was by me, Shivani, and the other was by Varsha. During my talk, I spoke about the subtle differences between the multiple different terms we hear these days - Ethical fashion, eco fashion, vegan, cruelty-free, recycled, upcycled and the most holistic of them all, sustainable fashion. I also spoke about the key issues surrounding sustainability that designers and customers should keep in mind while making any fashion choices.
Varsha’s talk spoke about fashion’s life cycle and what consumers can do to make their purchases count - Haulternatives, thrift shopping, clothes swaps, rentals, and shopping from sustainable brands
who are transparent about their supply chains.
We will compile all of these into a more detailed blog post in the near future.
A HUGE thank you to all our wonderful participants who were more amazing than we could have imagined - their energy and enthusiasm made us sure that we’re heading towards a more sustainable future! :) In each session we will be having new speakers, and diving into multiple other topics concerning sustainable fashion and mindful living.
If you’re in Chennai, we really hope to see you at the next edition of The Green Room. You could even sign up to our newsletter
for updates. :)
